Imagine you are at a dinner party in the early 2000s and someone casually suggests the government should nationalize all fast food chains to combat obesity. Eyes roll, forks clatter, and that idea, or even a law restricting the size of sugary drinks, is dismissed as fringe nonsense and good for a laugh. Fast forward a decade and, amid a public health crisis, politicians debate soda taxes and menu mandates without batting an eye. What changed was not the idea itself, but the Overton Window, the invisible boundaries around what is considered acceptable in politics and society.
Joseph Overton, a think tank executive, described this concept in the 1990s. It is not a dusty academic theory. It explains how yesterday’s radical rant becomes today’s serious policy debate.
Most people believe public policy discussions are driven by facts, reason, or the will of voters. In reality, those discussions are shaped long before a bill ever reaches the floor. The Overton Window determines which ideas are considered reasonable, which are merely tolerated, and which are dismissed outright. Ideas outside the window are treated as extreme. Ideas inside it are debated, refined, and eventually passed into law. Politicians rarely lead this process. They operate inside a window that has already been moved for them.
That window is not fixed. It shifts over time, often deliberately. Activists, media, academics, including those teaching our children, as well as advocacy organizations push its boundaries constantly. Ideas once viewed as radical are reframed as compassionate, necessary, or inevitable. Crises accelerate the process. Policies that would have been rejected outright just a few years earlier suddenly become common sense under the banner of emergency.
We have seen this pattern repeatedly. After the 2008 financial collapse, massive federal intervention in private markets moved from controversial to routine. During the COVID pandemic, policies that would have been unthinkable in 2019, including business shutdowns, mask mandates, vaccine mandates, and travel restrictions, were imposed almost overnight. Debate was not encouraged. Compliance was demanded. Dissent was punished.
Social policy provides even clearer examples. Twenty years ago, same sex marriage was opposed by a majority of voters and by many national Democrats. Within a decade, opposition was treated not merely as unpopular, but as immoral. Marijuana legalization followed a similar path. What was once criminal behavior became normalized, commercialized, and ultimately promoted as public policy. Today, debates over gender ideology, medical interventions for minors, and compelled speech have moved from academic margins into classrooms, government agencies, and corporate policy manuals.
These shifts did not happen naturally. They were driven by coordinated legal challenges from left leaning law groups, sustained cultural messaging, particularly in schools, corporate alignment, and pressure campaigns designed to move the window and then enforce its boundaries. Dissenting views were not debated on their merits. They were labeled harmful, their advocates were ridiculed, and serious discussion was pushed outside acceptable discourse.
Election systems matter in this environment. Ranked Choice Voting is often sold as neutral reform, a way to reduce negativity and reward compromise. In practice, it operates entirely within the existing Overton Window. RCV rewards candidates who avoid clear positions and appeal to second choice voters by drifting toward the center of the approved range of ideas. That does not create true moderation. It locks in the prevailing ideological drift.
When cultural norms have shifted left, the political center shifts with them. Alaska has seen this firsthand. In a state with strong conservative instincts, Ranked Choice Voting has produced outcomes that do not reflect majority preferences on key issues. Once the window is moved, the rules are adjusted to protect it. If the window moves left and RCV drives candidates toward the center, the result is often far more progressive than most Alaskans would ever choose directly.
Understanding the Overton Window matters because it explains why voters feel disconnected from the policies imposed on them. It explains why positions that were recently considered mainstream are suddenly portrayed as extreme. It also explains why simply winning elections is not enough if the boundaries of debate have already been rigged and continue to slide left.
If Alaskans care about free speech, fiscal responsibility, parental authority, and local control, we must pay attention not only to candidates and elections, but to the cultural machinery that decides which ideas are allowed to compete. The real fight happens long before the first vote is cast. It begins in our schools, with the unapologetic programming of our children.
The Overton Window is not destiny. It is not fixed, and it is not preordained. It is a battleground. Those who understand it can defend common sense and constitutional limits. Those who ignore it will continue to be told that yesterday’s principles are today’s extremism. As Sun Tzu warned, “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.” The same is true here. Understanding the forces shaping public thought is the first step toward protecting our freedoms and our children.
The battlefield is the Overton Window itself.
If only “fringe” suggestions be made now to get back to God, reinstate prayer in schools, follow and obey the laws and other radical ideas of that nature, maybe the effect would take place in time to save not only our state, but our country and our souls.
