Another common red flag of narcissistic or manipulative leadership is an insistence on centralizing all communication: telling team members, colleagues, or subordinates not to discuss issues among themselves but to bring everything directly to the leader. This is not efficient management—it’s an effort to control the agenda, isolate individuals, and prevent the healthy sharing of ideas and concerns that strengthens teams.

In a church, if the minister says, “Do not talk amongst yourselves—only talk to me.” In a workplace, if your boss forbids discussing matters with co-workers. In a school, if the principal tells parents, “Come to me; do not talk to others.” These are signals of toxicity, not strength.

A true leader encourages open dialogue: “If anything is bothering you, discuss it freely—come to me as individuals or as a group. Let’s identify issues and solve them together.”

Do not trust a leader who weaponizes this isolation. When you go directly to them, they may twist your concerns, use them against you, or sideline/remove you to shield their own shortcomings. Healthy teams thrive on transparency; controlled ones crumble under it.
